It’s summer of 2024
here in the northern hemisphere, and it’s been
a hot one in western Montana (and elsewhere, setting heat records
all over). Still, the apple trees are loaded and the garden is doing
well – it’s just tough to keep things watered. The smoke from
western fires is troublesome, but at present we aren’t on fire;
basically things could be worse. In the meanwhile, we’re plugging
away at helping folks lower their utility bill, provide back-up
power, or provide water for their homes, stock or irrigation. Take
care folks, and enjoy the waning summer.

Tax credits for solar power systems
If
you are a homeowner, business or an RVer, there are
likely to be significant tax credits to help offset the
cost of your investment in a solar power system. As an
RVer, you may even be able to claim that your RV is a
2nd home. There is a 30% federal tax credit (which will
make a tremendous difference come next April 15th!); for
information about form #5695, visit
https://www.irs.gov/forms-pubs/about-form-5695.
There may also be an additional 10% incentive, available
to businesses and non-profits, IF your goods are made in
the USA. Here’s more information on that:

If you have a business or are a school or non-profit
entity, there are other grant opportunities available;

Freight costs and related issues.
(from Chris Daum, owner of Oasis Montana).
Folks, many of the goods we offer must
ship via truck freight, and shipping costs even for packages are
getting pretty astronomical. In one way or another, I’ve worked
for other companies, then my own company,
shipping
a variety of goods for ~40+ years. Each year, UPS has generally
increased its shipping costs; the postal service rates keep
getting higher (and service unfortunately less reliable), while
diesel costs keep truck-freighted goods pricey to ship. While I
cannot set the cost of what a trucking company or UPS charges,
some things to consider when you’re ordering a solar power
system might include adding a few extra solar modules. We are
constantly getting calls from people who have a broken module or
two, or want to add ‘more of the same’ to their existing system.
Well, unless you are adding onto your system within a year or so
of its installation, you may be out of luck. Another point is
that the solar modules are getting so big, they are costly to
ship (due to their freight classification and the fact they are
‘non-stackable’). If you are acquiring a dozen solar modules for
your system, it will likely cost the exact shipping cost if you
order 16 or 20 total (the pallet footprint is the same). Another
consideration is getting a neighbor to go in with you on the
cost of a shipment. It can certainly make the shipping cost more
bearable. Most pallets of solar modules have in the realm of 25
to 32 modules per pallet. And many suppliers have a
‘pallet-breaking fee’, since it’s costly, and (I can attest)
time-consuming to build a large pallet to ship a smaller
quantity of solar modules. Thinking ahead could save you dollars
in the future.
For
truck shipments, residential deliveries are not available in all
locations. There must be ample room for a big truck to get in
and out, paved all the way; while it probably won’t be an
18-wheeler (but ya never know!), it will likely be a 40 ft. van
– something about the size of two UPS trucks. If you do not have
a forklift on hand, a lift gate will be needed, which lowers the
freight to ground level. Both residential deliveries – and lift
gates – are an additional shipping charge. The cheapest freight
deal is if the goods can ship to a commercial drop point –
business ‘on the beaten path’ or to a freight terminal – that
has a forklift and dock. It might save you $100 to $200 over a
residential delivery. These are just the facts.
